Shabbat Services
Check the calendar link above for exact times of services. Kabbalat Shabbat At our Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday evening, we welcome Shabbat with prayer and song. Services are held at sunset, but never later than 6:45 PM. Click here for Cantor Mendelson's chanting of the Kabbalat Shabbat service. Shabbat Morning Services We have several options for davening on Shabbat morning:
Services in the Milstein Sanctuary Our Shabbat morning services are held in the Milstein Sanctuary. Our service includes reading the entire Torah portion each week, traditional prayer, spirited congregational singing, a weekly Torah commentary, the commemoration and celebration of lifecycle events, and a sermon. We encourage congregational participation in all aspects of our Shabbat services. In the Kiddush that follows the Shabbat or Festival service, there is time to visit with friends, to discuss the message conveyed in the morning’s Torah Commentary or sermon, and to enjoy some refreshment. Often, members of the congregation participate in or sponsor the Kiddush. (For more information click here.) Library Minyan The Library Minyan meets twice a month in the gymnasium. The Library Minyan, is an alternative Shabbat morning service. It is “alternative” in that it is a service run by members, not the rabbis or cantor, in a smaller, more informal space. (The Library Minyan meets in the Gym.) Click here for 2007 - 2008 dates and to read more. Study and Worship Service Rabbi Zuckerman will lead this service in which the liturgy itself will be explored as Shaharit (the morning service) is prayed. There will not be a formal reading of the Torah, but those attending this service will have an opportunity to hear the Torah reading in the main Sanctuary prior to this service’s 10:30 starting time. Rabbi Zuckerman will, however, be teaching from the weekly Torah portion in a deeper and more focused way than sermons in the Sanctuary allow. Click here for 2007-2008 dates.
Contemplative Service Rabbi Tucker will be leading the Contemplative Service, which will feature davening Shaharit to soulful melodies, meditation, and the study of texts that contain Torah about the human spirit. The same advice as above applies to those who wish to hear the formal weekly Torah reading. Click here for 2007-2008 dates.
Family/Youth Services Shabbat B'yahad (Shabbat Together) is our Shabbat morning program for families with children 8 years old and younger. Shabbat Experience is our Shabbat morning program for children in grades2 through 6 and their families. Children can come without their families as well. Click here to learn more about Youth and Family Shabbat at TIC. Minhah - Maariv As the sun sets, taking with it the beauty of Shabbat, we daven Minhah (conduct the afternoon service), read from the Torah, proceed to Maariv (the evening service) and Havdalah (the prayers that separate Shabbat from weekdays). |
