Learning Institute Spring 2023 | 5783

We are looking forward to another great year of study as the Learning Institute kicks off on Tuesday, March 7. This semester, in response to participant feedback, we will be running two mini-sessions of the Learning Institute: one entirely on Zoom and the other in person only where we will sit together around a table with coffee and light refreshments. Each session will cover different material so learners should feel free to register for one, or both, of the modules! (The in person module is slightly more expensive to cover the cost of food and drink.) Both teachers plan to continue their topics from the fall which are listed below:

Isaac Bashevis Singer and JD Salinger Parallels and Paradoxes
This course will examine the short stories of Nobel Laureate Isaac Bashevis Singer, who wrote in Yiddish never deviating from themes of Jewish experience, and those of Jerome David Salinger, a quintessentially American writer whose Jewishness subtly impacted his fiction. Discussions will focus on the transition from the Eastern European and immigrant ambience of Singer’s work to the urban and suburban experience of a new generation of Jewish Americans. The text will be The Collected Stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer and Nine Stories by J.D. Salinger. The in depth presentation will be followed by an interactive discussion and question and answer exchange.
Instructor: Gloria Goldreich, critic, novelist and lecturer

Beyond Dispute: Debates that Shape Jewish Life
Is Jewish tradition intrinsically patriarchal? Should we prioritize Jewish causes or universal causes in our giving? How do we teach about the Holocaust and the State of Israel? Debates – philosophical, spiritual, ethical, cultural – have always been at the heart of Judaism. In this course, developed by the Jewish Theological Seminary and including video lectures from its faculty and fellows, we will explore some of Judaism’s biggest questions and seek to provide our own answers.
